A Simple Guide to Swim Meet Levels
Competitive swimming follows a clear pathway, and understanding it helps parents and swimmers know what to expect at each stage.
Progression isn’t fast — most swimmers spend a full season (or several) at one level before naturally moving up. It’s completely normal for swimmers to develop at different speeds, and confidence often grows long before qualifying times do. The pathway simply ensures every swimmer has the right environment to learn, race, and enjoy the sport.

Most swimmers start racing at Club Nights, where they learn the basics. As they gain confidence, they naturally move up through the meet levels — Development/Transition, Preparation, then Regional and State Championships. A few dedicated swimmers push all the way to Nationals, and Redlands has proudly supported many — including two who later became Olympic Gold Medallists.
These meet levels aren’t set by individual clubs — they follow Swimming Queensland’s official Competition Policy for Regional and Club Meets, which defines the qualifying requirements, rule tolerances and age groupings for each stage. This is why times recorded at a Development or Transition Meet can count toward entry at Preparation Meets or Regional Championships — the whole system is designed to build swimmers up progressively.

Quick Questions
How do I know which meet level my child should enter?
Your coach will guide you based on your swimmer’s confidence, race experience, and current times.
What happens if my swimmer doesn’t achieve a qualifying time?
It’s completely normal not to qualify straight away, so in the meantime, swimmers just keep racing at the appropriate level. Many swimmers take a full season (or more) to achieve their first qualifying time.
How often do meet levels run throughout the season?
Development, Transition, and Preparation Meets run regularly from September to April. Regional Championships occur once per season for Short Course and Long Course, while State and National Championships have fixed dates. Please see our Season Calendar.
