What’s on site at Cleveland Aquatic Centre?

The Cleveland Aquatic Centre is fully wheelchair accessible, with facilities to suit swimmers of every age and ability:

  • 50 metre heated outdoor Olympic pool — ideal for squad training, lap swimming, and competition.
  • 25 metre heated outdoor pool — used for rehabilitation, lap swimming, and lower-intensity sessions.
  • 20 metre indoor learn-to-swim pool — a sheltered space perfect for beginners and swimming lessons.
  • Outdoor water adventure park — a fun, family-friendly play area with the Rapid River Ride.
  • Gym and fitness facilities — for strength and conditioning work alongside pool training.
  • Covered grandstand — comfortable seating for parents and spectators during training and race days.
  • Accessible change rooms — showers and toilets, including two dedicated disabled-access rooms.

A Brief History of Cleveland Aquatic Centre

Built in 1977, opened in 1978

Cleveland Aquatic Centre has a proud history. It first opened to the public in November 1977. At the time, it was Redland City’s first Olympic-length pool. The official opening followed in March 1978. Local Government Minister Russ Hinze praised the Council for building a facility “for the future.” Nearly 50 years later, that vision still holds true. Today, it’s where Redlands families come to learn, train, and race.

Growing with the community

The centre has grown steadily over the decades:

  • In the mid-1990s, Council added two 25 metre pools. This expanded the site well beyond the original 50m pool.
  • Then, around 2007, an outdoor adventure playground and Rapid River Ride arrived. These additions made the centre even more family-friendly.
  • More recently, between 2019 and 2020, a major refurbishment delivered around $1.3 million in upgrades. This included new electrical infrastructure, supported by both Council and State Government funding.
  • Since then, further improvements have followed. These include new shade structures, updated fencing, pool heating repairs, and a solar panel system.
  • In 2023, Council refurbished the change rooms.
  • In 2024, the 20 metre learn-to-swim pool reopened after a full resurface. More upgrades are planned, so the centre keeps improving year after year.

How the centre is run

Cleveland Aquatic Centre sits on state-owned land, held in trust by Council. This makes it the Redlands’ own community aquatic centre. Belgravia Leisure manages daily operations on behalf of Redland City Council. Together, they combine Belgravia’s aquatic expertise with Council’s ongoing investment. As a result, the centre stays well-maintained and ready for swimmers of every level.

A pool with pedigree

This isn’t just any local pool — it’s a genuine training ground for champions:

  • Ashley Callus trained here before winning gold in the 4x100m freestyle relay at the Sydney 2000 Olympics.
  • Alicia Coutts also trained at this pool for years. She went on to win five medals at the London 2012 Olympics.

It’s a legacy that Redlands Swim Club is proud to build on, one swimmer at a time.
