Your Guide to a Smooth Race Day
That first race day can feel overwhelming — new faces, unfamiliar routines, and a lot happening at once. But it doesn’t take long to find your feet. Race days are where your swimmer puts their training into action, full of energy and excitement. This guide walks you through exactly how the day runs, from arrival to results, so you and your swimmer can feel confident from the start.
What You Need to Know
Race days follow a simple rhythm. Here are the big things to expect:
- Nominations & deadlines — Don’t miss nominations. Keep an eye on your email for reminders and entry lists.
- Arrive early — Warm-ups are essential, so plan to arrive around an hour before the first event.
- Check in with coaches — For warm-up, and before and after each race.
- Sitting with the club — Sit with other RSC families for support and safety.
- Timekeeping — Every family helps out. It’s an easy role and a normal part of swim clubs.
- Marshalling — Listen for announcements, head to the marshalling area, and follow the volunteers’ directions.
- Heats & results — Events run in heats based on entry times. Results appear later in Meet Mobile or Swim Central.

What Swimmers Should Bring
Your child should arrive ready to warm up with:
- RSC cap and goggles (plus spares for both, just in case)
- RSC shirt for easy identification in a crowd
- Towel x 2
- Appropriate racing suit (for more information on reputable racing swimwear, please refer to World Aquatics)

You’re Not Doing This Alone
Race days feel big at first — but every family learns the flow quickly. Coaches, committee members, and other parents will help you and your swimmer throughout the day. If you sign up for a timekeeping session, just tell another RSC family or committee member. We will make sure your swimmer is looked after.
Meets Need Volunteers
When RSC attends a meet, we must supply timekeepers for allocated lanes. Put simply, without volunteers, meets simply can’t run. Volunteering at meets is part of how all community swim clubs operate, and we make it easy for new families to learn the ropes.
A courtesy reminder: If your child is racing, it means another parent is already standing on the pool deck timekeeping your child’s event. Please show your support by doing the same for them.
⏱️Timekeeping basics
- Usually 2 timekeepers per lane
- One uses two stopwatches (auto + manual)
- One uses one auto stopwatch and has a clipboard and pen to record the manual stopwatch time
- The job is simple: count laps, stand on the ledge, and click the stopwatch when the swimmer touches the wall.
A few days before each meet, we’ll send a link via email and Facebook for parents to sign up for 45‑minute timekeeping sessions.
Volunteering is one of the easiest ways to support the club — and it comes with the best view of the pool.
Results & Live Tracking
Meet Mobile
Meet Mobile is a mobile app that gives swimmers and parents access to meet information, including the meet program, swimmer details, times and, most importantly, live results.
Almost all Preparation, Regional, State and National level meets use this app, and it’s highly recommended for checking results throughout the day. It costs approximately $30 per year and can be shared amongst family members if you are on the same mobile operating system. If you prefer not to subscribe, you can check Results Central online after the meet.

Swim Central logs your swimmer’s official results history. It’s the same system used for entering meets, and it updates automatically once results are verified.

Results Central is Swimming Australia’s online results lookup, where race results can be accessed after the completion of the meet.
